CHAIRMANS REPORT 2009
Ray Bennett had forwarded the 2009 Chairman’s report, which was read aloud in his absence by David Tucker. Please see full report below:
“It seems hard to believe that 3 years have gone by since I sat in Vern’s kitchen and chaired my first meeting. They say time fly’s when your having fun and that must be the answer!
We have had another successful year with all events getting great support from lots of different people; the most important thing is that these have been thoroughly enjoyed by all who have attended.
The year kicked off with another great quiz night held at the Panborough. With Michaela writing and hosting the evening I was confident that it might favour the younger end of the participants but accepted defeat- coming close to last yet again. Well done to Westwell lane or I think they called themselves ‘Westwelllies’ on a lucky win. This year we held an Easter party instead of a children’s Christmas party, this was well supported and Sharon, Michaela and Rachel did a great job with the attendance of children going up and up. This is an important part of the village life and many outside of the Flower show members and friend’s children enjoy the entertainment.
Skittles was supported well as always and remains a favourite with all, a good night was had with entertainment going on until the early hours of the morning to DJ Phil’s disco in the top bar, another regular spot now in the calendar. It’s all getting very competitive now with both top male and female going to the Tucker family. Next came street fair and thanks must go to the die-hard team who year after year go and do a great job of representing us. This year we tried something new with our summer event. Dave and Sharon put on pub Olympics at the Panborough, which was an extremely successful night. This included Skittles, table skittles Shove H’pney, darts and other pub sports. Well done to Mike and his team on taking Gold. The trophy is now proudly on display in the butchers.
After last years show we were all keen to get back on track hoping for a nice sunny day. Whilst the weather was not great it did allow us to get back to a full days attractions and events and with a combined team of Nic, Ed and Michaela, we saw a full field packed with different things going on. I think this has set a high standard for the future and look forward to seeing it repeated. A big well done to all. Special thanks must go to the handicrafts team where Pete, Phil and Helen have implemented a computer system that has taken out a lot of work and will make it easier to increase entries in the future. Carolyn and her team as always did a great job with the catering and Hilary made sure our finances were in order.
I would like to end by thanking you all for your support over the past three years. Rachel will tell you that I’m not the easiest person to get on with but you have all done well to put up with me. I think the Flower Show is a great team of long serving and new members and I am exited to see what we do next with the show. One last Thanks from me must go to Nikki who ensures we have some organization and has always said yes when really she wants to say no.
I wish the next chairman as much fun and enjoyment as I have had and look forward to continuing to do my part next year.”
